With a growing population due to an influx of immigrants, many cities decided to build more schools. Chicago was one such city. Before 1889, the city of Chicago had only five high schools. By 1990, the Chicago Board of Education had developed the Chicago Normal School, 15 high schools and 234 elementary schools. These schools provided not only education for students but also job opportunities for many individuals. This dramatic change opened up positions for 5,709 teachers (filled by 394 men and 5,315 women), who were paid about $325 per year. In 2008, Rudra Sabaratnam, the CEO of the City of Angels Medical Center, committed health care fraud when he attempted to extort money from Medicare and Medi-Cal. He was wealthy, yet, his greed for more money led him to cheat the taxpayer-funded healthcare programs of millions of dollars, depriving the people who actually need the help and money. The greed that Sabaratnam had was partly caused by the profit seeking capitalist system. The desire for wealth in capitalist society leads to corruption and causes a divide between the rich and the poor, so perhaps a system that supports equality and fairness is a better choice. The Eastern-European expression,â€Å"Capitalism is man exploiting man; communism is just the opposite,† summarizes one of†¦show more content†¦In The Grapes of Wrath, Steinbeck describes the bank as â€Å"something more than men...It’s the monster. Men made it, but they can’t control it† (pg 43). By describing the bank as a monst er, Steinbeck expresses his idea that the structure of capitalism is inhumane. Steinbeck stresses the idea that men who are controlled by capitalism are so focused on making money that, in the end, their greed controls them. The little farmers â€Å"lost their farms, and they were taken by the great owners, the banks, the companies,† because greed for money pushed the bank and companies to go against the common people (pg 364). The greed that is ingrained in capitalism is exemplified as the bank forces the farmers off their land but is also evident in the way large corporations work to lower fruit prices to get rid of small landowners. Steinbeck paints capitalism in a negative light, by exemplifying the cruelty of the bank and the greed of the large corporations. By presenting how the rich landowners and businessmen take advantage of the migrant workers and pit them against each other, Steinbeck reveals the harsher facets of capitalist society and the obstacles that the migra nts face within it. The migrants had lost almost everything with the bank reclaiming their lands, and, yet, they face more hardships at the hands of wealthy capitalists. Argument Essay Draft Going Green Today in our society we are always thinking about what we have to do, how much time we have to do it, and what can we use to get it done. Unfortunately, we do not always think about what effect it is going to have on our environment. It does not have to be Earth Day to think about being green. For xample, we can start recycling steel, aluminum, and copper. Another is changing laws on discarding old appliances, reusing and rebuilding old engines. In Rhode Island starting in 2008 a law was passed stating that manufactures must run their own take-back program or participate in the state run take-back program. Which is a start, but there is no law regarding old engines. Next would be to recycle old garments, and use refillable glass bottles. If we can pass the laws to make it mandatory to reuse more items such as engines, then we can cut down on the carbon dioxide from the factories producing new engines. Another way is if we make ompanies like Coca-Cola use refillable glass bottles, then we can reduce how much plastic is used yearly and recycle more often. In 2009, the U. S. generated thirty million tons of plastic but only recycled two million tons. I use a reusable water bottle instead of using a new plastic bottle every day. Also I recycle any paper, plastics, and glass I do use daily. These small things can make a big difference. In some articles there are many steps to go green at home with little effort. They suggest letting the fresh air in, wiping one’s feet to reduce using energy to clean, cleaning green, pulling the plug, and not touching the thermostat. Some articles suggest bringing one’s own bags when shopping, and saying bye-bye to bottled water. When we go to the grocery store we should bring reusable shopping bags or ask for paper bags and recycle after using. In San Francisco, starting the beginning of 2013 all retail stores need to no longer have plastic shopping bags they can only have; compostable bags, recycled paper bags, or reusable bags. With this change the retail stores are now going to be charging ten cents per shopping bag. If we do this every time we go to the grocery store, then we can cut back on how many plastic bags are used, which an save our environment. I myself purchased a few reusable bags which I bring with me every time I go grocery shopping. Finally, there are also some ways to reduce energy and household expenses. To do this we should be raising (lower) the home thermostat, brew one’s own coffee, take the â€Å"change a light† pledge which is to swap a regular light bulb for an energy star light bulb or CFL bulb. Another is to turn off and unplug electronics. Be mindful of paper products, make homemade cleaning products, and let clothes dry outside on the line. Another is slowing down on the highway, cutting back on driving by arpooling, and lastly, planting a tree. If we can all take charge and take a few of these steps such as unplugging electronics, using the dryer less, carpooling to work every day, then these simple steps can change our lives. By integrating these steps into our lives little by little, we can all cut back on how much energy we use. In 2008, the average cost for household energy was close to six thousand dollars. Just changing to a dial thermostat can save families hundred fifty dollars per year and by turning down the thermostat can save five percent on their energy bill. Consequently, these steps can save families money. In conclusion, we all need to take a few moments out of our day to think or actually do these tips on how to be â€Å"green†, then we could dramatically lessen our impact on our planet. But it doesn’t Just stop with what our families do. We should pass the tips on to other family members and friends to get new ideas. Everyone should do their part in making the environment a safer place for future generations. It is important that we reuse and recycle, find green alternatives at home and save both energy and money in the long run. Introduction Environmental problems affect everyone on the planet. Nowadays, the theme â€Å"Going Green† should be understandable for everyone all over the world. Human beings have to think more about their daily acting’s than several years ago because the resources are getting exhausted and the pollution worse. However, people know these facts but still many of them do not change their habits and that is a huge problem for this and future generation. â€Å"Going Green† is a general topic and contains many different explanation, opinio ns, examples and businesses. Further there is only one goal to achieve for everyone namely to save the world from the pollution by changing the way of living. In this report we are concerned about the theme â€Å"Going Green† in Hotels. What they have to think about and how they act to change their bad habits about pollution. What are the advantages and disadvantages out of going green for hotels? Pic. 2 2. â€Å"Going Green† 3. 1. Description â€Å"Going Green† is a popular term used to describe the process of changing one’s lifestyle for the safety and benefit of the environment. † (D. Grossman, 2006) Nowadays, there are quite a few laws, which contain the going green factor that means human being cannot use has much resources as they want. 3. 2. Happenings There is a huge amount of information about â€Å"Going Green† on the World Wide Web, in books, magazine, reports and document shows. There are current new information available and people have to be more aware about it. One young child from Germany got what many politicians wish to achieve, namely he got the attention from many important people from all over the world by creating a going green company called: â€Å"Plant For The Planet†. The aim of the company is to plant in each country over one billion trees to create in the world a CO2 compensation and their slogan to reach that aim is: â€Å"Stop Talking Start Planting†. Everyone can be a part of the community and support the world by going green. (Finkbeiner, 2007) However, is this just an example of one of many communities, which wants to get people start thinking and acting in a green way. Pic. 3 3. Hotel’s standpoint 4. 3. â€Å"Going Green† in the Hospitality Industry Going Green† is a big hospitality trend since 2010 within the hotel industry. † The amount of hotels increases, which are build with environmental concerns in mind. (Angelo R. M. Vladimir A. N. 2011). The hotels are often built, that â€Å"guests enjoy their holiday without even knowing that they are practicing ecotourism†. Christian Romano, 2012) However, not only the tangible subjects are to look at. The attitude and acting of the guests, staff and managers are of particular importance to reach the aim being a green hotel. 4. 4. â€Å"LEED† Certificate The hotels, which change their lifestyle to more environmental issues, can achieve a â⠂¬Å"LEED† (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certificate. (Angelo R. M. Vladimir A. N. , 2011). The goal of the certificate is to encourage the movement through the hotel industry and as well to let the guests, staff and manager start to think more about their waste. This certificate should be getting reachable for all hotels in the next several years. 4. 5. Examples of Change All over the world the hotels should at least â€Å"developing a green plan for energy, water, and solid waste use†. (Angelo R. M. Vladimir A. N. , 2011). There are so many things, which can be done to get greener. Here are only four points listed which could be done for example: * Unoccupied rooms: turn off and unplug all electrical equipments (Agbata, 2009) * Let guests sign on the waiter’s small hand computer (Agbata, 2009) * Provide guestroom recycler baskets for newspaper, white paper and plastic. G. Stewards, 2012) * Donate leftover from the kitchen and used soap and shampoo to people in need through. (G. Stewards, 2012) * 4. Acting 4. 1 Advantages The advantages of going green depend from which point of view you will watch. On one hand the human beings in general will take advantages out of going green, on the other hand there are the people who sell t he green products like solar systems, or for examples hotels show responsibility and will gain out of it a good image. But if we discuss about the general advantages of going green in hotels, we will benefit because of: Eco-products save money in future * â€Å"LEED†- Certificate * Tax saving: â€Å"Significant federal tax benefits are associated and several deductions apply for the cost of energy-efficient improvements. † (A. Faricelli, 2011) * Healthier environment (e. g. â€Å"significant reduaction of energy and water waste†) (A. Faricelli, 2011) 4. 2 Disadvantages â€Å"Going green† in the hotel industry does not only contain advantages there are many factors, which can have a drawback for those who change their lifestyle to going green. Often are for examples the costs only considered as an advantage as the energy bill will be less by using solar system however, the install costs contains already several thousands and has to be renewed after several years. (Lake, 2010) Moreover the purchase of more bins has to be considered if in each hotel room should be different kind of recycle bins or an other example would be the cost for changing the light bulbs to more energy efficient lightening. (D. Grossman, 2006) Another disadvantage is the time factor. To adopt the issue to live green can be time-consuming for those hotels who are fully committed to green living. For example, growing a garden is a great way to promote healthy living and sustainability but it doesn’t happen overnight and it needs a lot of space, which is often not disposal. (Lake, 2010) 5. Conclusion The importance of going green is worldwide well known and the implementation is increasing in all economic sectors and individual parts for several years. The hotel industry sector, which is the main consideration in this report, takes a substantial influence on hotel guests, which means billions of people from all over the world. The hotels should be a role model in directly or indirectly way in as many sections as possible. Statistics Project to Compare House Prices Essay Statistics Project to Compare House Prices Comparison of House Prices in two areas: Hypothesis: I believe that the house prices in the Consett area will be more expensive that the house prices in the Washington area. Introduction: I obtained a list of seventy houses for each area. I decided to do seventy, as I felt I would obtain a more accurate reading for my report. I attained my information from the internet, from various estate agents sites, www.harrington-brown. co.uk and www.Pattinson.co.uk . I have enclosed a copy of the houses, three from each area, the cheapest, the most expensive and a middle priced house, to show as examples. The reason I chose Consett was because I have recently moved to this area, and I felt it would be a to gain the knowledge of the houses prices in and around my area. I chose Washington because I used to live there. I felt it would be quite interesting to be able to compare the prices of the two areas that I have lived in. Another reason why I chose these areas is that, they are both outside of Newcastle City Centre, about the same distance away, just in opposite directions. So I felt that the prices would be valued at around the same market prices for both areas. As you tend to find the closer to the city centre you get, the more expensive the house, even though the house may be smaller, have no garden and possibly be even a worse area and state of house. I also found that the houses in the Consett area seem to be bigger inside and also have more space on the outside (gardens), this would obviously indicate that Consett is more rural that Washington. I also looked at the schooling in both areas, one, because I had been to schools in Washington and two, my son is in Consett. I found that in both areas infant and junior schools were off a very high standard, but senior schools in the Consett area were more
